MongoDB has appointed Alex Newman as area vice president for Australia and New Zealand, tasking him with leading the database vendor's local business.

His remit covers growing MongoDB's ANZ customer base and team, with a focus on helping organisations modernise applications and scale AI workloads using the company's data platform.

Newman brings more than 20 years of enterprise technology experience to the role. He joins from Salesforce, where he was regional vice president, and has previously held senior positions at Informatica, EMC and Macquarie Telecom.

Based in Sydney, he reports to Richard Scott, who was recently appointed as senior vice president, Asia Pacific and Japan at MongoDB.

"Alex brings deep enterprise data and AI experience to MongoDB, as well as a record of building teams and customer relationships across ANZ," said Scott.

"That's exactly what we need as local organisations move into the AI-in-production era and his leadership will help us deliver it.”

"The data layer is where AI succeeds or fails, and I believe MongoDB's intelligent data platform is positioned to be the standard for AI," Newman said.

"I'm going to be focused on growing the talented team we already have in the region and delivering outstanding results for our customers."

MongoDB said its ANZ engineering hub employs more than 70 engineers working on core platform development, including its global storage engine.

MongoDB's ANZ customer base includes Woolworths Group, Bendigo Bank, healthtech company Heidi, AI fintech Lendi Group and New Zealand's Pathfinder Labs.
