TfNSW seeks telematics for 1200-vehicle fleet tracking system

Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) has launched a request for proposal (RFP) for a comprehensive telematics solution to monitor its diverse fleet of approximately 1200 trucks and plant assets.

The procurement initiative aims to equip new fleet additions with advanced global positioning system (GPS) tracking and vehicle-specific features, with an estimated 160 devices to be installed annually across different asset categories.

The successful provider will supply and install telematics devices for approximately 80 trucks, 50 trailers and small assets, and 30 plant items each year, with quantities subject to adjustment based on fleet requirements.

Under the contract, the telematics provider will be responsible for coordinating installations with leasing companies, vehicle dealers and body builders, while ensuring proper configuration of devices with TfNSW fleet numbers and primary identifiers such as VIN or chassis numbers.

The RFP specifies that the telematics system must make collected data available to authorised third-party applications via an application programming interface (API) in real time, enabling integration with existing fleet management systems.

While most installations (more than 95 per cent) will take place in the Sydney metropolitan area, the tender document notes that some regional installations will be required across NSW, with respondents asked to provide a detailed fee schedule for these services.

The tender highlights that TfNSW collaborates closely with Fleet Management Organisations (FMOs) when procuring new leased assets.

In such arrangements, the FMO will coordinate with the selected provider to purchase specified devices on TfNSW's behalf, while the ongoing subscription costs will be managed directly by Transport for NSW on an agreed monthly payment schedule.

The successful provider will need to demonstrate capacity to perform necessary calibrations to ensure accurate data collection, including odometer or hour meter offsets where required, and provide ongoing support and service for all installed devices.
