Telstra announced today that it planned to add 100 company and or licensee-owned retail shops to the 300 that already existed over the next three years.
The new shops would feature a simpler range of products and accessories tailored to suit local markets but geographic locations were yet to be determined.
Telstra also has 11,000 partner and dealer shops.
A Telstra spokesman told CRN that online and shop visits had increased, against the current retail trend, because customers wanted to “touch and feel the growing choice of smartphones”.
This, the spokesman said, has led to a decline in phone requests.
The telco also revealed plans to set up a new online customer service unit.
Gerd Schenkel, who joined Telstra from his role as general manager of UBank will head the unit, which will operate online self-service platforms for customer transactions.
“Telstra’s new online customer service unit will support our growing customer base, providing customers with the option of faster and more convenient ways of interacting with the company, including through social media,” Telstra CEO David Thodey (pictured), said.
