KPMG Australia becomes world's first to achieve ISO AI certification

Management consulatants KPMG Australia has become the first organisation globally to achieve ISO 420001 certification for artificial intelligence management from BSI Australia.

The certification is part of the validation of KPMG's approach to implementing and managing AI systems according to the new international standard, which was released in December 2023.

"AI can solve complex challenges, and unlock new possibilities for growth," John Munnelly, chief digital officer at KPMG Australia said.

The firm assembled a dedicated team in February 2024 to pursue certification, requiring a comprehensive audit of its AI governance, project management and trusted AI practices.

BSI had to bring in an overseas auditor to conduct the final assessment due to the newness of the certification pathway.

"AI has the potential to be a significant force for good in society, transforming lives everywhere," said Manuela Gazzard, president of regulatory services at BSI.

KPMG Australia has demonstrated early commitment to AI adoption, having launched KymChat, its proprietary version of ChatGPT, to staff in March 2023 and clients in July 2023.

The firm recently introduced KymTax in June 2024, one of the first generative AI applications globally for tax services.

The ISO 42001 standard provides a framework for establishing and improving Artificial Intelligence Management Systems within organisations.

It aims to assure stakeholders about the safe and responsible use of AI in products and services, while promoting continuous improvement in AI management practices.
