Google and HP have paused sales of the Chromebook 11 in Australia over the potential for users to be burnt by an overheating charger,
JB HiFi is the only retail chain in Australia currently stocking the notebook. A JB Hi-Fi store spokesperson confirmed the product was "recalled" from stores following its withdrawal from US chains in November.
A recall notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the notebook's charger was faulty and was at risk of overheating, melting and potentially catching fire.
"The risk is potential dermal injury and damage to materials from contact with an overheated charger. There may also be a potential fire risk, although no fire has been reported."
In a joint statement, Google and HP said sales of the Chromebook 11 are being paused. The notebook is no longer listed on either company's website at the time of writing.
The ACCC said customers who purchased a Chromebook 11 will be contacted by Google and offered a free replacement charger. In the interim the computer can be charged with generic microUSB chargers.
Google and HP representatives declined to comment on the recall.
