Telstra joins ConnectID digital verification scheme

Telstra has partnered with Australian Payments Plus (AP+) to offer digital identity verification for customers activating selected mobile services, eliminating the need to share personal documents.

ConnectID links Telstra with trusted identity sources such as major banks to verify customer information securely.

The service connects with Australia's four major banks - Commonwealth Bank, NAB, ANZ (through ANZ Plus), and Westpac - enabling millions of their customers to verify their identity online.

Tens of thousands of Telstra customers have used ConnectID since its introduction late last year.

"We are delighted to work with Telstra to bring ConnectID to its customers," Lynn Kraus, chief executive officer AP+, said.

"In the digital economy there is a vital need to build trust between people and the organisations they interact with", Kraus added.

"Identity verification is a crucial step; however we know it can be a bit of a hassle for our customers and isn't always a streamlined experience", Michael Griffiths, executive director of operations at Telstra, said.

ConnectID operates as a secure bridge between organisations and identity sources, without storing any personal data itself.

"By simplifying the process and removing the need to collect and retain original ID documents, ConnectID is a more secure option, and another way we're helping to protect our customers", Griffiths said.

ConnectID verifies essential information such as name, age, and address without requiring customers to upload passports or driver licences.

The digital verification system is currently available to customers seeking selected new mobile services who bank with participating financial institutions.

Both companies are exploring opportunities to expand the service to other Telstra offerings.

ConnectID launched in October 2023, with banks CBA and NAB being among the first to sign up for the service, and ANZ joining in June the following year.
