Ingram Micro yesterday announced its intention to acquire Vantex after placing a NZ$2 million deposit to purchase the distributor, which has offices in New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia.
In an exclusive interview with CRN, Jay Miley vice-president A/NZ Ingram Micro, said, Vantex currently provides tech support and service to customers of its retail point of sale, barcoding, mobile and wireless technology in cooperation with its reseller community.
Ingram will continue to provide tech support and services by leveraging current Vantex partners as well as expanding its partner base.
"We intend to partner with vendor partners as well as reseller partners to make sure we can deliver on that service level, combined as a partnership," said Miley.
Commenting on Ingram's relationship with the point-of-sale market, Miley said, point-of-sale and data capture is not a new agenda for Ingram Micro it's been led globally under Ingram's CEO Greg Spierkel for several years.
"The team's done a good job globally in pushing this agenda and I think it's somewhere between five to seven companies we've bought in the last several years in this space."
Ingram's first acquisition was around five years ago in North America. The distributor then expanded its reach into Europe buying niche distributors and most recently Ingram expanded into Asia after buying a company in China.
"It's a good market, we believe it's an attractive market on a lot of levels and this move compliments that global strategy.
"We didn't have a significant play in Australia and New Zealand in the segment, now we are following the lead and strategic initiative."
As to whether other POS and data capture distributors should prepare for an Ingram takeover, Miley refrained from speculating on global movements but revealed he doesn't believe 'at least in Australia or New Zealand' that Ingram would be buying in that space.
By the end of the month the acquisition will be complete and Vantex Australia managing director, Matt Maley will lead the new division and report to Miley. Vantex will retain its name and function as a division of Ingram Micro.
Miley confirmed Vantex staff will remain in their current locations and Ingram has no plans to shift staff or their locations.
Overall Ingram will gain 120 employees with the "skills that will cater to the market.
"We acquired the company because of its people," he said.
