Acusensus inks contract extensions with NSW, QLD transport authorities

Acusensus, an Australian technology company that develops AI-enabled road safety solutions, has received contract extensions from both the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW).

The contract with the State of Queensland, acting through TMR, is for the provision of mobile phone and seatbelt enforcement technology in the state. The enforcement solutions detect illegal mobile phone use and seatbelt non-compliance, providing prosecutable evidence that supports enforcement and helps change driver behaviour.

TMR has exercised the first of two twelve-month options, aligning the service term end dates for the initial batch of fixed site and trailer units first deployed in Queensland during 2021 to now end 30 November 2027. The incremental contract value associated with the extension is expected to total approximately A$4.3 million (excluding GST).

The program has been expanded twice, with the first expansion announced on 15 August 2023 and the second on 11 December 2024. Acusensus stated that the rollout of the second expansion, which will close to double the number of mobile phone and seatbelt trailer units, is "progressing well", with the final tranche of units to be delivered in Q1 FY27.

"TMR was the first jurisdiction in the world to use automated seatbelt compliance enforcement, and the data now shows a significant reduction in unrestrained fatalities on Queensland roads. In addition to the injuries and casualties avoided from deterring phone use and speeding, we estimate that 15 fatalities are avoided each year as a result of TMR’s seatbelt compliance initiatives."

Each unit carries a five year term commencing from its first deployment date.

In NSW, the company has entered a Deed of Variation with TfNSW to extend its Mobile Speed Camera Services Agreement for an initial six months, with an additional six-month option available.

The value of the NSW extension is around $16 million (excluding GST).

The tender process for a new long-term mobile speed camera services contract with TfNSW is ongoing.

The original MSC Services Agreement was due to expire on 30 June 2026, with the Deed of Variation now extending the expiration date until 31 December 2026. TfNSW retains an option to extend the MSC ServicesAgreement for a further six-month period from 1 January 2027.

The tender process for a new long-term mobile speed camera services contract with TfNSW remains ongoing.
