Vocus gets smarter with big data thanks to Australian AWS partner Bryte Systems

Bryte Systems has been wooing major customers such as Vocus, ANZ Bank and sportswear manufacturer Under Armour after developing a faster way to build cloud data lakes, run complex queries and big data analysis workloads on AWS' Amazon S3, EMR and Redshift with minimal impact on operational performance.

Its BryteFlow tool, which is a finalist in this year's CRN Impact Awards, provides near real-time access to enterprise data. It can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud and is configurable. BryteFlow facilitates rapid Data Lake, Data Warehouse or Hadoop-based analysis by enabling low latency data replication - deployed with enterprise class security.

According to Bryte, the level of cloud and big data integration on offer is a key differentiator. The big data stack for AWS offers a diverse set of tightly integrated technologies that allows customers to store, process and rapidly analyse all types and volumes of Enterprise data across a common platform at low cost.

Working with Vocus

In order to manage its large national subscriber base effectively, Vocus recognised the importance of making data-driven and customer-focused decisions.

The carrier began implementing a fully integrated data analytics function into its business to help it compete with and take market share off competitors. Vocus needed to get smarter with its data and talk to prospective customers in clear, compelling language.

This was a challenge because its organic growth and expansion via acquisitions had brought more data into the business that needed to be seamlessly accessible.

Vocus general manager analytics Hamish Mogan said: "Working with the team at Bryte has been a huge weight off my shoulders. By leveraging the considerable knowledge base and experience of the Bryte team, we have achieved in three months what we didn’t believe we would achieve within the first year of our existence within Vocus Group."

Due to the high volume, pace and variety of data needing to be analysed, Vocus recognised that a traditional business intelligence approach built around the corporate data warehouse and on-premises infrastructure would not be appropriate.

Its analytics team decided to build an end-to-end analytics function on Amazon Web Services based around the evolutionary analytics concept of an enterprise-wide, agile and scalable data lake, designed to provide a common platform for enterprise-wide analytics, innovation and experimentation with data.

"As a highly recommended partner by the AWS team, Bryte Systems have been instrumental in this journey so far. Their experience and expertise has been invaluable in both designing a best practice architecture and implementing this architecture within our local environment, and within our virtual private cloud," Mogan said.

"It has been a very challenging process to establish this function within a business that is already quite mature, however, with Bryte’s help, we have made solid progress and are now starting to reap the rewards that a dynamic, cloud-based architecture affords."

Bryte Systems is a finalist in the 'IP, product and platform innovation' category at the 2017 CRN Impact Awards. The full list of finalists has been announced at our CRN Pipeline conference in Melbourne on 22-23 March and can be found here. The winners will be announced at the Impact Awards dinner during the CRN Pipeline conference in Sydney on 6-7 April.
