Australian telco services provider Universal Communications Group Limited (UCG) has won a contract to connect single-dwelling units in Tasmania, New South Wales and the ACT to the NBN.
The work is part of NBN Co's efforts to tackle a “significant backlog” of premises passed by fibre that are not yet serviceable, according to NBN Co chief exec Bill Morrow.
UCG has already been connecting multi-dwelling units to the NBN since 2012. This expansion of the provider’s role will allow the company to double its workforce, said UCG CEO Ralf Luna.
“We are particularly proud of our Tasmanian operations. We’ve been active in the state since 1995 and this new contract will allow us to more than double our workforce from the current number of around 105 by employing local people and engaging local businesses,” he said.
Fibre optic cables that have already been installed in the street will be connected to the wall of the premises - a procedure described in a statement as a “bulk drop”.
