PC sales to suffer as software soars in Australia: Gartner

The devices category, which includes PCs, mobile phones, printers and tablets, will be the only major area of Australian tech spending to fall this year, predicts Gartner.

Gartner predicts a $600 million fall in spending on devices, down 5 percent from $11.5 billion in 2014 to $10.9 billion this year. Gartner includes mobile phones, PCs, printers and tablets in this segment.

Devices are the only sour note in the forecast, which foresees a rise in overall IT spending of almost $1.6 billion in Australia this year, a 2 percent rise from $76.5 billion in 2014 to $78.1 billion in 2015.

Software will be the fasting-growing area of spending; Gartner tips growth of 9.8 percent or $839 million to reach about $9.4 billion.

The biggest segment in overall spend remains IT services, tipped to see an increase in spending of around $800 million, or 2.9 percent, to hit $28.8 billion this year.

The next largest spending area is communications services, including fixed and mobile for consumer and enterprise markets. Gartner predicts spending will increase by by more $300 million, or 1.2 percent, to reach $26.6 billion.

Meanwhile, data centre systems including servers, storage, networking equipment and communications applications are tipped to see an increase of $205 million, or 9 percent, to total around $2.4 billion.
