Microsoft extends free upgrade offer for Windows 10 S users

Microsoft has extended its offer to Windows 10 S users to upgrade their operating system to Windows 10 Pro for free for another three months.

The offer was initially slated to last until 31 December 2017, but is now available until 31 March 2018.

Windows 10 S is a streamlined version of Microsoft's flagship operating system that comes with the Surface Laptop which was revealed in May. However, Windows 10 S users are restricted to using applications only from the Microsoft App Store, and runs the Edge browsers and Bing search by default.

Microsoft markets the new operating system towards schools and businesses that's easy to deploy on low-end devices and comes with enhanced security features.

Microsoft wrote in a blog post that the offer is intended for users that need an application that is not yet available in the Microsoft store. "We hope this provides increased flexibility for those people searching for the perfect back-to-school or holiday gift," the company said.

The cheapest Windows 10 S device is the Surface Laptop with an i5 processor and 128 GB of storage for $1499. Microsoft said in May that it was working with Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, Toshiba, HP, and Samsung to offer a wider range of low-end Windows 10 devices for students.
