Australian quantum company Archer Materials has launched a national Quantum Commercial Pilot, giving Australian organisations direct access to IonQ quantum computing hardware to test high-value computational problems across logistics, defence, healthcare and pharmaceutics.
The pilot invites industry, government, universities, startups and cross-sector consortia to submit problems that are impractical for classical computers to solve due to processing time or complexity - including simulations, cryptography, security and optimisation challenges.
Applications close 15 October 2026.
Selected participants will receive complimentary compute time on IonQ Forte Enterprise at no cost. Archer said the pilot is intended to identify organisations with commercially significant computational requirements and build a pipeline of validated quantum applications and potential customers in Australia.
Projects will follow a three-stage process: defining the commercial problem and classical computation benchmark; validating the approach using quantum simulation with support from Archer and IonQ's quantum engineering teams; and then executing the problem on IonQ quantum computing hardware.
"The Quantum Commercial Pilot is designed to bring Australia's most significant computational problems to quantum hardware; to benchmark, stress-test, and identify where quantum methods offer a measurable advantage over classical approaches," said Simon Ruffell, chief executive at Archer Materials.
Ruffell said the IonQ partnership gives Archer and its Australian enterprise customers access to IonQ's quantum hardware and algorithm engineering teams to work on what he described as multi-billion-dollar problems across the national economy.
"Australia is lagging international peers in quantum readiness and early adoption. Archer is positioning its quantum expertise in the market to accelerate our national readiness and strengthen Australia’s economic and strategic advantage," he said.
Archer is also running work previously developed with the CSIRO on IonQ's commercial quantum computing platform, which the company said will allow for more advanced testing and optimisation.
In parallel, Archer and the CSIRO are delivering a series of industry workshops to identify and qualify high-value industrial problems in quantum computing and quantum machine learning. The first workshop is targeting the Australian financial services sector, bringing together problem owners and quantum specialists to assess computational challenges and define proof-of-concept projects.
Problems identified through the workshops may progress to quantum hardware development and commercial pilots.
