GitHub to push into Australian channel with new partners

Software version control toolmaker GitHub is looking to expand its partner network in the ANZ region as it seeks to push its on-premises and SaaS-based tools further into the market.

GitHub’s director for ASEAN and ANZ Sam Hunt says since engaging directly with the local developer community 12 months ago, GitHub has seen a 50 percent increase in use of the on-premises Enterprise version of its tools. He says GitHub is now looking to further that growth through the expansion of its partner network.

“We can’t drive that high level of adoption of how to best use these tools without partners,” Hunt says.

Hunt, who will be appearing at the forthcoming CRN Pipeline conference, characterises GitHub partners as being organisations that either work with clients to build better developer solutions, or technology partners that provide additional tools that complement the GitHub environment.

One partner already working with GitHub is Canberra-based Link Digital, which has a specialist practice in data analytics for government agencies.

Hunt says the goal is to build a partner network that is not cannibalistic.

“We are looking for partners that are invested in development operations and a more agile approach to the general development toolset” Hunt says.

“We feel that if we get the right partners on board at the start, we can work very closely with our existing and new customers in making sure they are well and truly enabled to take up the use of the tools and get a better result.”

He says GitHub will also continue working with the local software developer community.

“Where the channel is critical is making sure the tools are being used in the best possible way, and that is where the partners really play a big part. Developers should be developing. Business partners can help them manage, deploy and consult on best practice around how these tools are used in general.”

“And that partner network is one of the keys to our success. It is a channel strategy - period – from an engagement perspective in the ANZ and Asian region.”

Hunt says GitHub’s partner program provides support around marketing and enablement, and GitHub will work with them on new customer engagements where relevant.

GitHub recently released updates to its Business and Enterprise versions of its tools. Version 2.9 of its Enterprise on-premise tools now includes support for Google Compute Engine, the ability to have organisational-wide projects, support for load balancing, and additional enhancements for code review.

“What this release shows us is the desire for GitHub to address the enterprise requirements that are getting as feedback on an ongoing basis in the product,” Hunt says.
