Microsoft-owned developer platform and source code repository GitHub will soon offer robust data residency features for Australian users, as well as those in the European Union.

The upgrade is for the GitHub Enterprise Cloud offering, with data residency being available from October 29 for EU customers, with Australia being next soon after, a GitHub spokesperson told CRN Australia.

Data residency allows enterprises to store their code and repository data in their preferred region, addressing growing concerns about data sovereignty and compliance.

The data residency feature offers several benefits, including enhanced user control for managing accounts, unique namespaces for companies on ghe.com, and improved availability for business continuity and disaster recovery.

Australia is the second global market to access local data residency, GitHub said.

"In light of the mounting importance of data residency needs, there is a clear desire for organisations to have more control over where their most valuable asset, their code, is stored," GitHub chief executive Thomas Dohmke said.

The company bills itself as "the most widely adopted Copilot-powered developer platform", based on the integration of Microsoft's generative AI that GitHub offers.

In Australia, banks ANZ and CBA already use GitHub Copilot for AI-powered software development.

GitHub's channel partners in Australia include including Arkahna, Furo, Galah Cyber, Arinco, Versent/Telstra and Mantel Group.

Earlier this year, the company introduced GitHub Copilot Enterprise, allowing organisations to leverage generative AI across their software development workflows.

GitHub Enterprise Cloud operates on Microsoft Azure.
