Equinix splashes $54 million on expansion of Sydney SY4 data centre

Equinix will fork out US$42 million (A$54 million) to double the amount of cabinets in its fourth Sydney data centre.

The addition of 1500 cabinets brings the total number of cabinets to 3000 in the SY4 data centre located in Alexandria. The phase two expansion also increases usable floor space to more than 12,500 square metres.

The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Equinix said the expansion was driven by increasing demand for cloud service. The co-location provider said that there are more than 275 cloud providers across Equinix' Australian data centres, as well as 725 companies and 155 network service providers.

“An interconnection-first strategy for IT is now central to realising digital transformation, and Australia is fast becoming an interconnection hot spot," said Equinix Australia managing director Jeremy Deutsch.

"Today, we are already supporting more than 100 local and multinational companies in SY4. Our investment in SY4 demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing the most robust architecture and interconnection options that allow customers to accelerate business relationships and speed to market.”

Data centre indexing organisation Cloudscene once again ranked Equinix as the top operator in Oceania, North America, EMEA and Asia based the number of facilities and points of presence.
