Epson has been recognised at the 2024 WorldStar Global Packaging Awards in the electronics category for its cushioning material made from used copier paper.
Epson stated that this is the second time it has received the WorldStar Award, with the first being in 2007 for ink packaging used in large-format inkjet printers.
Organised by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), the awards recognise packages that have won awards at national and regional packaging contests.
Winners are selected based on their packaging technology and design excellence.
The cushioning material is made from used copier paper collected within an internal wastepaper collection system, according to Epson.
The company uses its proprietary Dry Fibre Technology to reduce the paper to fibres with minimal water and to mold the fibres into cushioning materials designed to absorb shocks.
Epson claims the paper cushions have shock-absorbing properties equivalent or superior to those of high-performance petroleum-derived cushioning materials.
Additionally, as the packaging is entirely paper-based, it can be disassembled to reduce volume for disposal and recycling. Epson indicated that the award recognises its packaging technology and environmental initiatives.
The packaging material had won the President of Japan Productivity Centre for Socio-Economic Development Award in 2023.
It also received an award in the Transportation Package category in the AsiaStar 2023 Awards organised by the Asian Packaging Federation.
