Coalition to seek provider for $12m train wireless

The coalition government has announced it will seek expressions of interest for a $12 million project to improve mobile coverage for commuters on the Central Coast, if elected in next week’s election.

An estimated 30,000 residents from the Central Coast commute to Sydney every day, who drop out of mobile reception over 60km of railway between Wyong and Hornsby in northern Sydney.

The project would deliver continuous in-train mobile coverage to commuters, as well as wi-fi access points at each station.

"This will improve the lives of thousands of Central Coast residents who leave home before dawn each day and return after dark," said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. "It will make work time more productive, enhance leisure time and help families and friends connect."

The federal government expects the NSW state government would pitch in a further $4 million for the rollout. An expression of interest for mobile carriers to bid for funding would be set up.

The Turnbull government has already committed $60 million to its mobile blackspot program during the election campaign.
