Aussie payments battle: eWay beats Square with POS reader

eWay has beaten US payments provider Square to market with its first mobile point-of-sale card reader for Australian businesses.

The device, called the eWay mPos, allows small businesses to swipe credit cards including Visa and MasterCard, and take EFTPOS payments. The reader is compatible with contactless, chip and magnetic swipe cards.

eWay is touting integration with well-known apps – for example, invoices can be sent to a Xero dashboard, payments can be linked to a Shopify shopping cart, and customers and contacts can be looked up via Salesforce. Customisable receipts can be emailed or sent via SMS.

The mPos unit is manufactured by Quest Payments and Mint Payments, and distributed exclusively by eWay.

US payments provider Square has set up an office in Australia and launched its app here, but is yet to announce a card reader for the local market. The Square website states the company is working to bring card processing to Australia.

Today Square announced a free app called Dashboard that allows business owners with the Square Register app to access Square’s business reports on their smartphone.

MYOB also has a mobile payment terminal on the market in Australia, called PayDirect. PayPal also offers a reader called PayPal Here. The Commonwealth Bank also offers the Albert and Emmy devices while other bank options include Westpac’s Mobile PayWay and ANZ’s FastPay Next Generation.
