Apple may be planning to drop separate graphics chips from its lower and middle range laptops in favour of the power of Intel Ivy Bridge processors alone. But is this a good thing?
The news comes from chip site semiaccurate who said Apple changed its order for the lower end and middle range MacBooks to “do without discreet Nvidia GPUs”, in favour of Ivy Bridge graphics.
So what does this mean? On the one hand it’s bad news for Nvidia (who has made itself an Apple competitor with the quad-core Tegra 3) who won’t be supplying GPUs to middle and lower end laptops anymore. But on the plus side it means more space for extended battery or smaller frames, and longer battery life thanks to no separate GPU.
