How Newcastle's Dynamic Business Technologies provides backup and DR
Nathan Franks

We speak with managing director Nathan Franks.

Who are your backup and disaster recovery vendors?

We mainly use Datto for backup, disaster recovery and business continuity, replacing three vendors, and now use Datto from the desktop to the data centre. We offer a managed backup and disaster recovery service.

When did your company first get involved in this area?

We have always provided backup management. With the emergence of public cloud services, there has been a rapid shift of clients from tape to cloud backup. We have offered disaster recovery-as-a-service for about two years.

What are your credentials in this area?

Datto is a recent shift for us and we are about to complete their Datto Certified Advanced Technician certification. We also have engineers certified in Backup Exec, Veeam and StorageCraft technologies.

Who are your main distributors?

Ingram Micro, Rhipe and ACA for backup.

Heard about any cool developments recently?

Not specifically new, but improvements in backup and disaster recovery solutions that reduce recovery time objectives and recovery point objectives to minutes, and are affordable to the small to medium business market, certainly make the job easier.

Can you tell us about a recent backup/DR deployment you have done?

We recently deployed a backup and disaster recovery solution with cloud retention for an accountancy firm testing customisations to its practice management software. We have created a sandbox to test the changes in the cloud without impacting the firm’s day-to-day operations or compromising its backup solution.

What’s driving customers’ backup and DR projects?

The primary driver is current threats such as ransomware. Media coverage of corporations and small to medium businesses being impacted has driven interest from our client base and prospects. Low barriers to entry, peace of mind, and removing the need to take backups home is driving the adoption of cloud-based backup and disaster recovery.

Backup and disaster recovery is...?

Cheaper than starting again.
