Cisco takes $730 million hit over faulty parts
Cisco has asked customers to alert the company if undertaking activities requiring power cycling, due to concerns over faulty memory components in a swathe of out-of-warranty enterprise switches and routers. The company has set aside US$655 million ($730 million) to replace the faulty memory components in out-of-warranty hardware.

Heartbleed Bug discovered in Cisco and Juniper Gear
The Heartbleed bug, a vulnerability within the OpenSSL encryption protocol that has put system administrators on alert and internet users on edge this week, was discovered in networking gear from Cisco Systems and Juniper Networks. Both companies Thursday issued advisories, identifying affected products and those still being investigated for the bug. The threat posed by Heartbleed being present in routers, switches and other networking gear is that hackers could intercept passwords, user names and other sensitive information as they cross the corporate network.

Super Cisco rollout in country's biggest free wi-fi deal
Network contractor Visionstream is a key installation partner in a $4 million rollout of free wi-fi to Canberra announced this week. The rollout will see 700 Cisco access points deployed by iiNet around Canberra, and is touted by the broadband provider as the largest free wi-fi network in Australia.

Australia could be the most "vibrant" country in the world for Cisco's fledgling cloud solution, according to a senior exec. The vendor has already revealed Telstra as the first InterCloud hosting partner, as well as a tie-up with Dimension Data, whose cloud operations are centred in Sydney following the BlueFire acquisition in 2011, under the leadership of Dimension Data Cloud Solutions CEO Steve Nola.

Cisco Australia has appointed Leo Makhlin as its new managing director of enterprise sales, the networking giant has confirmed. Makhlin is a former high-ranking Cisco executive, with his resume including a previous role as vice president, global enterprise for Asia-Pacific, Japan & China. He was also a general manager of major accounts for nine years at Cisco.

Cisco to slash 6,000 jobs
Cisco plans to cut another 6,000 jobs, as the network equipment maker works through a transition toward a new cycle of high-end switches and routers. The latest round of layoffs, which follow Cisco's forecast of tepid current-quarter results, is at least the third workforce reduction in about as many years as the company has struggled to sustain growth.

EMC takes custody of VCE as Cisco marriage falters
VCE said Wednesday US time it is officially becoming "an EMC business," confirming weeks of speculation that Cisco Systems is reducing its ownership stake in the converged infrastructure joint venture. Cisco's stake in VCE is being cut from 35 percent to roughly 10 percent, in an effort to drive what it called "the next phase of evolution" for the company. The change is expected to be finalised this quarter.

Telstra's new data centre to host Cisco and VMware clouds
Telstra has showed off its new data centre facilities in Clayton, Melbourne, two years after announcing it would invest $100 million in its construction. "Over the past two years, we have created a world-class purpose-built facility which adds more than 40 percent capacity to our current data centre capability and forms an integral part of our cloud infrastructure," said Telstra property executive director John Romano in a blog post.

Cisco accuses Arista of "pervasive copying"
Cisco Systems has filed two lawsuits against switching archrival Arista Networks, alleging Arista has infringed on a number of its patents and stolen Cisco copyrighted material. The lawsuits, which Cisco general counsel Mark Chandler detailed in a blog post Friday US time, have been filed with the US federal district court for the northern district of California.
