Xandros has launched the newest version of its Linux-compatible desktop graphical environment, hoping to entice users away from the virus- and worm-plagued Windows.
Xandros Desktop 2.0, based on Debian Linux 4.0 and an enhanced version of the KDE 3.1.4 desktop, features a new four-click installation process, and includes a browser, e-mail and instant-messaging clients, and OpenOffice.org's OpenOffice 1.1, a suite of productivity applications that runs under Linux.
Xandos pitched Desktop 2.0 as an alternative to Windows, and touted the new environment's smoother integration with Microsoft Office and Microsoft-based networks.
'Most users are fed up with viruses, worms, and the installation of patches. With Xandros, you work just like in the 'other' desktop, only better,' claimed Andy Typaldos, CEO of Xandros, in a statement.
When Xandos Desktop 2.0 ships on December 9, it will come in two editions - Standard and Deluxe - at prices of US$39 and US$89, respectively. The Deluxe Edition includes a version of CrossOver Office 2.1, which lets Linux users run Microsoft Office applications, as well as other select Windows software.
A 30-day trial version of Standard version will be available for downloading on December 16 from the Xandos Web site.
