Vodafone offers 2GB free data to say sorry for outage

Vodafone is offering all customers a bonus 2GB of data to say sorry for the outage that struck its network on Sunday night.

Reports of problems started at 6pm on Sunday, with the telco officially confirming the outage at 10.30pm, when it posted on social media: "We’re aware of an issue which is causing intermittent disruption to voice, data and text services for some customers."

The outage was blamed on a router malfunction on the 4G network, which saw customers switched to 3G or 2G, leading to congestion on these networks.

On Monday, Vodafone said it would apologise to customers by giving them 2GB of free data. "It’s also to say thank you to our other customers for their loyalty."

The offer extends to all post-paid and pre-paid customers who top up within a month, whether or not they were affected by the outage.

"We apologise sincerely for this disruption and we hope the 2GB of bonus data will allow customers to enjoy more of the Vodafone network," according to a statement from the carrier.

Vodafone competitor Telstra was hit by a number of major outages earlier this year, and offered not one but two "free data days" to apologise to customers.
