Vodafone apologises for major outage

Vodafone has apologised to its customers following an overnight outage that disrupted the network, leaving users unable to make calls, send texts or use the internet.

The telco officially confirmed the outage at 10.30pm, posting on social media: “We’re aware of an issue which is causing intermittent disruption to voice, data and text services for some customers.

“We’re working to resolve ASAP. We don’t have an ETA at this time but will keep you updated. We’re  very sorry about the inconvenience.”

Outage tracking website Aussieoutages.com tracked reports of interuptions beginning about 6pm, peaking with 1098 reports at 9pm before beginning to trail off from midnight.

Some users took to social media using the hashtag #vodafail to express their frustration.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the carrier said: “Mobile services were progressively restored from 10.45pm, with all mobile services fully restored at 1.35am.”

The disruption was attributed to a router issue that made 4G services unavailable, pushing users onto congested 2G and 3G services.

In a marketing bid earlier this year, the telco offered unhappy customers of rival networks a free month of access, which included a dig at Telstra’s free-data compensation plan following a string of service failures.

Telstra experienced massive outages in February, with a human error blamed for widespread network problems that disabled mobile voice and data for several hours.
