Vocus scores fibre contract for natural gas project

Vocus won a contract to build, operate and own a high-capacity submarine fibre optic network for a proposed offshore gas project near Darwin.

The venture, called the Barossa Project, is a natural gas and light condensate field located in the Bonaparte Basin, around 300km north of Darwin. It is a joint venture between multinational oil and gas companies ConocoPhillips, SK E&S and Santos Offshore.

The telco was tapped by the venture to build a 500km cable loop called the Bonaparte Basin Cable Loop (BBCL), and will be integrated with Vocus’ 2100 km North West Cable System. Vocus will hold a minimum 15-year service term for operation and maintenance following a three-year design and construction phase.

“We are pleased to build upon our position as Australia’s specialist fibre and network solutions provider,” Vocus chief executive Kevin Russell said.

“We have developed a highly robust and resilient architecture that will support Barossa and connect to our existing submarine cable assets off the North-West coast of Australia.”

Russell also revealed that Vocus will also be working with Alcatel Submarine Networks for cable manufacture and marine works.

“Vocus has established a clear differentiation in the market through our commitment to major infrastructure projects, and our unique capability to address these opportunities, Russell said.

“We have an excellent record of delivering these projects on time, on budget and built to specification.”

Vocus is currently working on three major undersea cable systems, including its North West Cable System that commenced in 2016. It is also involved in the 4600km Australia Singapore Cable and the 4800km Coral Sea Cable System (CS2), commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) earlier this year.
