Subsurface data and energy intelligence provider TGS has contracted tape-to-cloud migration specialist Tape Ark to shift approximately 40 petabytes of seismic and subsurface data stored on tape into a cloud environment.

TGS said the shift will strengthen the digital foundation underpinning its imaging, analytics and data-delivery workflows.

Once everything is moved to the cloud, TGS will have on-demand access to its global data library, along with scalable access to high-performance computing for imaging and advanced analytics.

It will also enable better collaboration between subsurface and digital teams, the company said, as well as faster turnaround for project delivery and customer workflows.

“With ongoing investment in modernising our data and technology platform, this migration is a key step in how we continue to evolve TGS’ data and technology platform,” said Wadil El Karkouri, executive vice president of imaging and technology at TGS.

“It enables greater speed, scale, and flexibility in how our customers access and use subsurface data.”

“TGS has a clear vision for how subsurface data should be accessed and used in a cloud-first environment," said Guy Holmes, Tape Ark’s founder and chief executive.

"Our platform was designed specifically to support migration programs of this scale, and we’re pleased to support TGS as it advances its global digital infrastructure,”
