Sydney telco Vertel completes comms network upgrade for ACT's Icon Water

Icon Water, ACT's water and sewerage services provider, has successfully upgraded its communications network in partnership with telco Vertel.

The upgrade replaces Icon Water's outdated mobile public trunking analogue system with a modern, secure communications network.

Several new components form part of the new system, including:

  • Mission Critical Push to Talk (MCPTT) system
  • Push-to-talk handsets and accessories
  • 4G/Satellite vehicle connectivity solution
  • 4G coverage extensions in several buildings
  • Enterprise Mobility Management

At the core of the new network is the Airbus Agnet MCx, a 3GPP Standards-based system hosted in a secure Australian data centre.

This platform offers 99.99 per cent availability and leverages cloud technology, mobile broadband, and satellite communication.

The Airbus Agnet MCx provides secure transmission of data, video, and voice, compatible with both Android and iOS devices. It features end-to-end encryption, emergency calling, remote and lone worker safety functionalities, and advanced location tracking.

Vertel equipped Icon Water's fleet of about 100 vehicles with an Enhanced Mobility Solution, ensuring network connection throughout and beyond Icon Water's operating area.

High-gain antennas on vehicles create extensive Wi-Fi zones for connecting to corporate apps.

Dr Tony Pollock, Icon Water's CTO, said the upgrade enables the company to remain responsive to the Canberra region's needs while complying with OH&S policies and guidelines.

The upgrade represents an improvement in Icon Water's communications capabilities, enhancing both operational efficiency and worker safety.
