Salesforce.com and Oracle ended their faux quarrel overnight and announced a comprehensive cloud computing partnership agreement.
The nine-year deal effectively sees Salesforce become an Oracle shop. The SaaS challenger will standardise on the Oracle database, Oracle Linux operating system, Java middleware and Exadata hardware.
The two companies also announced plans to integrate Salesforce.com applications with Oracle's Fusion HCM and Financial Cloud applications, but scant detail was provided as to how and when.
Until today's announcement, Dell had been the favoured hardware supplier for Salesforce.com, as the company stated it was cheaper and better quality than Oracle's Exadata mainframes. But Oracle chief Larry Ellison has long boasted that Salesforce.com is a large Oracle customer.
The chief executives of the two companies, Marc Benioff and Larry Ellison have entertained the industry with a public slanging match over the past few years, with the Salesforce.com boss warning customers that Oracle's offering was a "false cloud".
However, the two appear to have made peace with one another, with the partnership extending to the applications, platform and infrastructure tiers.
In a media statement, Benioff said “Larry and I both agree that salesforce.com and Oracle need to integrate our clouds.”
Ellison chimed in with a similar statement: “We are looking forward to working with salesforce.com to integrate our cloud with theirs.”
The announcement comes hard on the heels of the cooperation deal between Oracle and Microsoft, which will see the two companies work together to provide cloud solutions from both camps to customers.
As with the Microsoft agreement, terms of the Oracle and Salesforce.com deal were not disclosed.
