System assembler Pioneer Computers released a $799 notebook and has promised resellers they would make up to seven percent margin on the product.
Pioneer managing director Jeff Li said the company worked with Intel to launch the DreamBook Light 350S low-cost notebook which would still offer reasonable reseller margins.
“We are working with Intel to help the local channel because I believe there is a major problem with the notebook market.
“Multinational brands are only offering one to two percent of margin to resellers,” Li claimed.
“How can the market survive if resellers have little-to-no margin? The channel will disappear because they can’t survive."
Li claimed resellers were only making a $15 margin on some competing notebooks.
The DreamBook Light 350S starts from $799 and features; Intel Celeron-M 1.3-2.3GHz with expandable memory up to 1GB.
It also has SiS M661M chipset; 14.1" XGA (1024x768) TFT screen; integrated 128-bit 2D/3D graphics engine; optical drive; Win 95 keyboard; AC'97 2.2 compliant sound system.
