Oracle to kill off Java browser plug-in

Oracle is ending support for the Java browser plug-in after more than 20 years in use.

According to an Oracle blog post, the browser plug-in will be phased out in the newest Java Development Kit update due out in September.

Microsoft, Google and Mozilla had already started phasing out support for the plug-in in their browsers.

Oracle suggested users still using plug-in to migrate from Java Applets and applications to the to the Java Web Start platform.

Java browser plug-in was popularised in the 1990’s for displaying app-like content, video and audio. In recent years, Java had endured controversies for its security flaws.

The poor track record had led to official vulnerability notices from browser vendors to disable Java in users' settings.
