Optus Business and NBN Co add fibre to Coles' diet

Optus Business and NBN Co will deploy an all-fibre network for supermarket chain Coles, in a deal that sees previous arrangements with Telstra reach their use-by date.

NBN Co will connect more than 2400 Coles stores and other sites with optic fibre cables, to network improve performance and allow deployment of more applications.

"The increased speeds and capacity of this new network give us the flexibility to rapidly increase the speed at which our stores can access and transfer data," Coles chief information and digital officer Roger Sniezek said.

"We are delighted to be partnering with Optus to leverage the speed, flexibility and agility of the new network, implement new digital initiatives, and ensure we are well-placed to take advantage of emerging technologies in coming years."

As part of the deal, Coles will also sell new Optus products in store and online and new Optus-related perks will be integrated with its loyalty program flybuys. The telco will also provide corporate mobile telephony services for Coles across Australia for voice and data.

"Optus is pleased to be partnering with Coles to provide an enterprise-grade network and a range of information and communication technology services," Optus Business managing director John Paitaridis said.

"Both Coles and Optus Business share a passion for customer service, which is at the heart of our strategic partnership. We look forward to working with Coles on future initiatives.”

In November, Optus business landed a similar deal with major industrial company CSR Limited to provide voice, data and mobile services for $12 million across 3 and a half years.
