Optus begins network sharing to boost regional 5G coverage

Optus said its customers in regional Australia will receive enhanced mobile coverage as the telco activates its network sharing agreement with TPG Telecom.

The Multi-Operator-Core Network (MOCN) partnership enables Optus to accelerate its 5G network deployment across regional areas, bringing forward completion by two years.

Regional communities will see a significant expansion in 5G infrastructure, with Optus planning to install 1500 sites by 2028, growing to 2444 sites by 2030.

The agreement grants Optus access to additional spectrum, improving service quality for customers in regional areas.

"More Optus coverage across Australia means more opportunities for our customers to connect with family, business clients, friends and other loved ones in their busy lives", Anthony Shiner, managing director of customer solutions at Optus, said.

The telco has also unveiled Optus 5G+, a standalone network infrastructure promising up to five times more coverage than standard 5G services.

Several regional centres already have access to Optus 5G+, including Busselton in Western Australia, Orange in New South Wales, Toowoomba in Queensland, Ballarat in Victoria, and Launceston in Tasmania.

"Optus 5G+ represents our ongoing commitment to innovation and delivering the very best for our customers." Shiner said.

Whether you're in a busy metro area or exploring regional Australia, we're working to provide stronger, faster connections in more places", Shiner added.

The company's regional expansion extends beyond terrestrial networks, with Optus partnering with Starlink to enhance connectivity through satellite technology.

That collaboration led to the launch of Satellite Internet for Business in 2024, with plans to test direct-to-mobile satellite technology in partnership with SpaceX.
