Officeworks has launched a mobile virtual network, using the Optus 4G network.
“accord mobile by Officeworks”* offers half a dozen plans, all month-to-month affairs without ongoing contracts.
The three voice and data deals all offer unlimited calls and SMS, with the basic product offering 3GB of data for $15 a month. $25 buys 10GB and $45 of international calls while $45 buys 30GB and $450 of international calls. It won’t be hard to burn through those international allowances: accord’s price list [PDF] lists rates of more than a dollar a minute for many nations.
The data-only plans offer monthly data allowances of 7GB, 50GB or 100GB at $20, $55 and $75 respectively.
There’s nothing startlingly different about these plans, although they are a little cheaper than other big-brand virtual network operators. Amaysim, for example, charges $20 each 28 days for a 2.5GB phone plan with no international calls, or $25 for a 5GB data-only plan.
The release of the mobile plans follows Officeworks’ December 2018 launch of an NBN service. CRN’s not seen that offering register on market share reports.
accord mobile has a better chance of breaking through, as Officeworks operates over 150 stores and will surely make sure accord SIM cards are highly visible in as many places as possible. Combined with the chain’s massive advertising spend, accord could sow discord among other MVNOs.
