Novell has signed a deal with the NSW Department of Commerce to supply NSW government departments with Linux software.
A new enterprise software agreement has given all NSW government agencies and departments access to Linux solutions.
Rhonda O'Donnell, president of Novell Asia-Pacific, said the government chose open source because it addressed issues such as security and cost. The NSW government has an open standards and interoperability initiative, which is complemented by the use of Linux.
“It is pleasing to see that government departments would be offered greater choice and that open source will be on a level playing field with alternative solutions," she said.
Novell would also provide professional consulting services to government agencies and departments who are considering an open source solution under the contract.
