New coalition to offer regional VoIP
Netgear, Cirrus Communications and Broadband Phone have announced a plan aimed at boosting regional Australia’s access to VoIP services.

The service, KISS, sees the companies bundling broadband, telecommunications access and hardware, and will be extended to areas such as the NSW Central Coast and the QLD Sunshine Coast.

KISS will offers free calls between KISS customers and local, intercity or interstate calls for $0.10 fixed rate untimed. Mobile calls will be charged at $0.29 per minute and international rates range from $0.035 a minute.

In a statement about the deal, Cirrus Communications CEO, Eric Heyde, said the biggest issue for telecommunications consumers living in regional areas was cost.

“Regional customers generally make more STD and mobile phone calls than city dwellers and subsequently have larger phone bills,” he said. “VoIP frees-up consumers in terms of competitive choice and offers them a cheaper alternative to current fixed-line services.”
