NBN Co has responded to a viral video featuring a makeshift cabling job in a Sydney suburb, saying the work was “inherited” from Telstra.
The 40-second clip was posted on the Facebook page “Humans of Bankstown”, showing some broadband cables strung up between two trees as a makeshift solution to address access issues if the cables were placed underground. The story was first reported by ABC News.
An NBN Co spokesperson told CRN the cabling work was discovered when the company was rolling out the network in the suburb of Hurstville.
“The cabling has been in place since or before July 2015, prior to the arrival of the NBN in the area, and was acquired in that condition from the previous network provider,” the spokesperson said.
“When we take on existing infrastructure, we undertake repairs if and when we need to. Technicians have attended the site to examine the construction in order to arrange rectification works.”
A Telstra spokesperson confirmed that the cabling work was installed prior to the NBN’s arrival in the area, and that it was difficult to determine how long the fix had been in place.
“It appears to have been a temporary fix that has not been followed up and completed properly,” the spokesperson told CRN.
“Our focus at the time was on keeping our customers connected, unfortunately in this case we should have gone back and completed the repairs.”
