Microsoft releases identity management system for AI agents

Microsoft has released a new identity management system for artificial intelligence agents.

Named Entra Agent ID and unveiled at its annual developer conference, it is aimed at organisations worldwide transforming into what the tech giant calls "Frontier Firms".

The term signifies businesses characterised by workforces where humans and AI agents collaborate.

Entra Agent ID extends identity management and access capabilities to AI agents, automatically assigning identities in a Microsoft Entra directory when agents are created within Microsoft Copilot Studio and Azure AI Foundry.

Microsoft said that identity-based cyberattacks now account for nearly 80 per cent of breaches, with approximately 7,000 password attacks occurring per second.

According to Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index, every organisation is expected to begin transitioning into a Frontier Firm within the next two to five years.

To facilitate this transition, Microsoft has partnered with ServiceNow and Workday to integrate Microsoft Entra Agent ID with their respective platforms.

This collaboration aims to enable automated provisioning of identities for future digital employees.

Microsoft said Entra currently has more than 900 million monthly active users.
