Huawei makes splash in Westfield shopping centres

Huawei is rolling out “Experiential Zones” in several Sydney Westfield shopping centres in an example of the Chinese vendor stepping up efforts to win over Australian technology buyers.

The move is the first time Huawei has showcased its consumer product range of phones and mobile broadband hardware in one location in Australian shopping centres, a spokesperson confirmed.

“It’s a big brand push for us,” the spokesperson told CRN, with the company having also recently completed an outdoor advertising campaign in Sydney.

The promotion started in Westfield Chatswood last weekend and will launch at Bondi Westfield on 7 February. Huawei is also showing off its products at Westfield in Parramatta and plans to do the same at Sydney City Westfield from 9 February and Miranda Westfield from 16 March.

The vendor is using its Mate 7 smartphones to lure shoppers, with Huawei representatives giving away “keys” at Westfield shopping centres at Bondi and Chatswood on 7 and 8 February. Key holders can then visit the vendor’s showcase to see if their key unlocks access to a Mate 7 phone.

Huawei claimed 1,500 keys were handed out at Westfield Chatswood last weekend, with 1,300 people visiting the vendor’s showcase. The vendor is giving away five phones each day at each location running the giveaway.

News of the giveaway has seen some people travel three hours to take part, a spokesperson claimed.
