HP is buying a Cambridge University spin-off while it contemplates spin offs of its own.

Hewlett Packard’s Vision B.V. subsidiary will buy British business intelligence software maker Autonomy for £6.2 billion ($A9.9 billion).

HP said the Cambridge University spin-off recommended its shareholders to approve the US company's offer of £25.50 a share, a 64 percent premium on its recent closing price.

Autonomy management issued the recommendation hours after HP notified Nasdaq of the offer.

Autonomy founder Mike Lynch was expected to make about £500 million from the transaction. Its customers in Australia were believed to include Telstra and Media Monitors.

Representatives of the two companies were unable to confirm their relationships with Autonomy at the time of publication.

HP was spinning off its PC division in the face of tougher market conditions and was dumping its TouchPad and smartphone businessess.
