The government has warned Australians about a phishing email doing the rounds that bears a striking resemblance to myGov website.
The warning comes from the government's Stay Smart Online website, which said scammers are attempting to trick Australians into sharing their myGov login and bank account details.
The phishing email purports to be from Medicare and asks recipients to update their electronic funds transfer details to receive Medicare benefits and claims.
The link contained in the email takes recipients to a website that looks similar to the actual myGov website but with a .net domain address, rather than the actual .gov.au domain.
After entering their log-in details, users will be asked to enter their secret security questions before being taken to an imitation Medicare website, where they will be asked for their bank account details.
The fake website is made to look even more convincing as they feature myGov and Medicare's logos.
Stay Safe Online said myGov and Medicare do not send messages with hyperlinks or web addresses, and recipients should not click on them if they suspect an email to be fake.
If someone suspects their information could have been compromised, Stay Safe Online recommends contacting the National Identity and Cyber Support Service, or report any possible crimes to the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network.
