Former M2 CIO becomes Spirit Telecom COO
Matthew Hobbs

Spirit Telecom has hired former M2 Group CIO Matthew Hobbs as its new chief operating officer.

Hobbs sold his company Wholesale Communications Group to M2 Group in 2007 and joined the telco afterwards as national wholesale sales manager. He was promoted to CIO in 2009, to lead 120 staff and integrate ten acquisitions into M2.

He left M2 in 2011 to join Emersion Software Systems as business service manager. He later joined Alltel as national sales and operations manager in 2013.

Hobbs replaces Russell Mitchell, who is taking on the newly created role of general manager of market development.

Spirit also announced the appointment of former Origin Energy marketing executive Catherine Bolch as its new chief marketing officer.

Chief executive Geoff Neate congratulated the executives on their new roles: "Catherine and Matthew bring a wealth of experience to Spirit, not only in their respective roles, but also in understanding the growth requirements commensurate with Spirit’s ambitions.

"Russell moves into creating a new revenue generating segment, which will assist in Spirit’s growth."

Mitchell was credited with transitioning the telco from private to public in June. Spirit listed on the Australian Securities Exchange after raising $2.62 million through a reverse takeover, giving it a market capitalisation of $16.7 million.

The Melbourne-headquartered company services more than 200 buildings with high-speed broadband, not including NBN connections.
