The federal government has announced a review of the Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) scheme and Australian Government financial assistance to SME exporters.
The schemes are often used by Australian technology companies to enter offshore markets. Austrade’s success stories for the scheme lists the likes of Nuix and Freelancer.com as past recipients that have gone on to better things.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Senator Simon Birmingham, yesterday announced a review of the schemes.
Austrade noted that while the EMDG recently received an extra $60m of funding, it the scheme has "not seen significant reform in over 40 years.”
The review will therefore “consider how Government can make it easier and simpler for businesses to access support, consistent with the Government’s commitment to streamline service delivery.”
“The Review will also take into account research to explore the impact financial assistance can have on exporters and to understand the characteristics of successful exporters.”
Which you’d think the government already knows pretty well, given that the Export Awards program has run for decade.

Consultations will commence later in October 2019, with the review’s final report due in March 2020. Just when any changes to the schemes emerge has not been discussed.
