Dynamic Standards International looks to take SMB1001 global

Dynamic Standards International (DSI) has announced it has global ambitions for the Australian-born SMB1001 small business cybersecurity standard.

An international version of the Australian-born SMB1001 small business cybersecurity standard will commence certification from 1 January 2025, announced DSI, which was formerly Cyber Security Certification Australia and is the standards development organisation behind SMB1001.

DSI’s move to a “globally focused standard” reflected “growing demand for practical cybersecurity certification for SMBs across the Americas, Singapore, New Zealand and the South Pacific,” according to DSI Co-Founder Professor Ryan Ko.

DSI looks “forward to welcoming experts from across America, Canada and Europe to advise on the next generation of standards to help manage the increased threat of cybercrime globally,” Professor Ko said.

Certification against an “internationally aligned standard equips Australian and global businesses to build and articulate cybersecurity maturity in global supply chains,” DSI stated.

Businesses using SMB1001 include Brennan, SEQ IT, Tarian Cyber, Huntress and Spirit, which spoke about its use of the standards at CRN Channel Meets Melbourne in October 2024.

SMBiT Professionals recently joined the SMB1001 steering committee, which also includes CyberCX, AISA, AUSCERT, ACS, ASD, Deloitte, Sekuro, Insurance Council of Australia, McGrathNicol and Telstra, among others.

Jason Murrell, co-founder and chair of the Australian Cyber Network, presented SMB1001 to partners at the SMBiT Professionals National Conference in Melbourne in October.

SMB1001 has been “mapped to and aligns with existing guidelines, frameworks, and standards (see Working Group), such as Australian Signal Directorate’s Essential Eight”, according to the DSI website.

“This means that SMBs who begin working towards complying with SMB1001 will be also starting their journey towards complying with the mapped to guidelines, frameworks, and standards.”

SMB1001:2025 was published in August 2024.
