Dropbox partners with Google for G Suite integration

Dropbox is bringing native integration with Google's productivity applications with a series of new integrations across the two platforms.

The new integrations available to all Dropbox users include support for creating and editing Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files from within Dropbox. Dropbox Business administrators will also be able to manage G Suite files like any other file within the cloud storage platform.

Dropbox also flagged incoming integrations with Gmail and Hangouts Chat. Users will be able to access and create Dropbox file links within Gmail, as well as choosing to see Gmail metadata. Google Hangouts users will be able to search, share and preview Dropbox files within Hangouts Chat.

“We want to make it easy for our users to work across devices with the tools they love," said Dropbox VP of engineering Tony Lee.

"This partnership with Google Cloud is one more way we're creating a unified home for content and the conversations around it. We're excited to work with Google to break down silos and centralise the information teams rely on every day.”   

The new integrations are expected to go live in the second half of 2018.

Last year, Dropbox unveiled a new set of APIs to attract new integration partners. The cloud storage vendor has already partnered up with companies like Atlassian, Microsoft Outlook, Autodesk and Adobe to integrate their respective services.

As for Google, director of product management at Google Cloud Ritcha Ranjan said: “Our goal is to make G Suite accessible no matter what tools you bring to work, and these integrations help our shared customers better collaborate in the tools they use every day, Working with Dropbox to make our apps work better together helps our customers focus their time on work that matters.”

Earlier this week, Dropbox finally revealed its plan to go public with a US$500 million IPO.
