Dick Smith adds new budget Oppo phone to shelves

Chinese smartphone vendor Oppo will launch its $299 F1 smartphone at Dick Smith stores next week.

The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 octacore processor and 3GB memory. It comes with 16GB storage and runs Oppo’s custom operating system ColourOS 2.1, which is based on Android 5.1.

The F1 is fitted with a 1280x720 resolution screen on a 5-inch body - the same size as Oppo’s flagship R7 smartphone.

A 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and an 8 megapixel front-facing camera feature in the handset. Like other Oppo phones, the F1 has the option to install two SIM cards at the same time.

Dick Smith brought Oppo into the Australian mass market last year when it scooped an exclusive retail deal to sell the Oppo R7 from Allphones.

Alongside the release of the R7, Dick Smith rolled out 150 dedicated kiosks in its stores. The only other smartphone vendors with dedicated kiosks in Dick Smith stores are Apple and Samsung. Dick Smith also sells Oppo’s R7 Plus and R7s from the kiosks.

Dick Smith was placed into administration and receivership on 5 January with around $390 million in debt.

The F1 will also be available from Oppo’s online store. Oppo partners with Optus to sell the R7 on a $40-a-month plan.
