Data#3 appoints managed solutions chief
Sue Carter, Data#3

Data#3 has appointed Sue Carter as general manager of managed solutions, overseeing several hundred people and helming a division at the forefront of the company's push into cloud services.

Carter, who replaces Pat Murphy, has "extensive experience in running large operations" and "deep understanding of sales and delivery of large outsource contracts", according to Data#3 group general manager Laurence Baynham. She has previously held senior leadership positions at Unisys, Fujitsu, and CMC.

Baynham said managed solutions and cloud services in particular are the fastest-growing business within Data#3.

Data#3 provides infrastructure-, storage- and backup-as-a-service, as well as having data centres on the east coast of Australia. Baynham said Data#3 had been providing these types of managed solutions for around four years.

Hybrid IT services are a major focus for Data#3, Baynham said. "I would suggest a couple of years ago there was a lot of hype in the market about going towards a public cloud. That hasn't eventuated. There's still growth in public cloud, but customers are making more informed choices and are selecting what's best for them.

"There are a number of different factors. Price is one. There are the application workloads, there is the risk profile and security profile of those apps – taking into account all these factors customers will make their own minds up."

In a statement, Carter predicted that Data#3 had "the opportunity to lead the way for Australian organisations in the cloud computing domain."

Data#3 announced a restructure last year, which included some redundancies and saw the company move from five lines of business to three.

Since then Data#3 has won a multimillion-dollar contract with Brisbane Airport.
