Cisco is doing away with individual certifications for associate-level roles to make way for a single certification that encompasses a broad range of technologies.
The vendor announced at Cisco Live this week that it has retooled its Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) programs into a single exam that will educate entrants in the fundamentals required for a career in IT.
The new CCNA certification requires just one exam that covers a broad range of fundamentals based on the latest networking technology from Cisco, as well as software development skills. There’s also an exam and training course to help participants prepare for the full exam
The most significant addition is the inclusion of three new topics: security fundamentals, automation and programmability. It will still include the previous topics covered by the old CCNA: network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity and IP services.
Individual certifications for previous topics will all disappear though, which includes cloud, collaboration, cyber ops, data centre, industrial, routing and switching, security, service provider and wireless. These topics will all be rolled into the new CCNA.
The new exam will go live on 24 February 2020.
Cisco advised that anyone currently completing a CCNA certification should keep going, as they will receive the new CCNA certification plus a training badge in their corresponding area.
It’s still expected that students will have one or more years of experience with Cisco’s solutions, knowledge of basic IP addressing and a good understanding of network fundamentals
