Aussie server revenues up 40%, driven by cloud growth

Australian server revenues grew by 37 percent to reach $947 million in 2015, according to Gartner data.

Despite the strong sales figures, the number of actual server units sold in Australia dipped by 0.7 percent to 110,752 units.

Gartner senior research analyst Andrew Kim explained the numbers, saying that shipments of commodity x86 servers were dropping, but revenue from Unix and other platforms was growing rapidly.

“The increase is due to the growing transition of enterprises towards cloud services, which is driving the demand from service providers,” said Kim.

He added that Windows Server 2003's end-of-life had driven refreshes, while the new IBM z13 mainframe system and Power 8 processor had also "contributed revenue growth."

Servers shipped globally in 2015 grew 9.9 percent, with revenue up 10.1 percent.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise still had the biggest worldwide server market share but fell 2.6 percent to 21.2 percent for the fourth quarter of 2015. Dell was second with 17.9 percent market share and Lenovo was third with 17.9 percent.

Huawei saw the biggest jump in sales, growing 27 percent to take a 5.1 percent market share with 149,742.
