Atturra delivers network incident management system for Powerlink Queensland

Atturra has designed, built and implemented a next-generation Network Incident Management System (NIMS) for Powerlink Queensland, replacing legacy systems that had been in place for more than 20 years.

The NIMS is part of Powerlink's Next Generation Network Operations program and consolidates incident, hazard and risk information into a single environment. It has been modernised onto SAP S/4HANA and is natively integrated into Powerlink's existing SAP asset management platform.

Atturra built the hybrid solution on SafetySuite for SAP, extended by custom SAP applications and powered by SAP Fiori Launchpad, SAP BTP and OData services, with Esri ArcGIS integration for spatial data mapping.

Key capabilities include a Smart Search tool for system-wide visibility, an Unplanned Outage app for root cause traceability and automated notification workflows.

Powerlink provides electricity to more than five million Queenslanders and 241,000 businesses across a network stretching 1,700 kilometres from Cairns to the New South Wales border, covering 15,449 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 152 substations.

"Introducing a solution like NIMS enables us to more efficiently communicate incident management activities across all of the people that play important roles in keeping our network and assets safe, secure and reliable," said Ed Sellwood, general manager of real time network operations at Powerlink.

Alastair Brooke, general manager of safety solutions at Atturra, described the project as "one of the largest, most technically complex" the company had ever delivered.

“We partnered with Powerlink to reimagine its business, ensuring that its next-generation IMS would be future fit to meet the organisation’s reliability goals as the network transitions to a greater mix of renewables and is challenged by increased volatility and fragility," he said.

"Modernising operational technology and developing new ways of working is never easy, but with the right people, the right solution and the right approach we were always confident of the outcome.”

Atturra will manage support and enhancements for the solution until 2030 and beyond.
